God’s Provisions

Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Are you taking peptides? Are you taking supplements? Are you drinking the right tea? And what about massage therapy? Sound therapy? Light therapy?

Does this overwhelm you? It does me. It seems we could spend a fortune and half our day focusing on all these health initiatives, trendy ideas, or new techniques. When there are too many options, many people have a hard time deciding where to invest their time and money. What about diets? Calories, macros, keto, carnivore, vegan – which diet should you do?

Philippians 4:19 says “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Every need....every need including for your health.  God is not only interested in our spiritual health but also our physical health and meeting our daily needs. How does this apply to healthy habits such as diet, nutrition, sleep, and even mental health. Let’s look deeper at how God provides all we need according to his riches.  When it comes to food, look at what God has provided us such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, oils, meats, legumes, whole grains, eggs, and dairy. I'm not a nutritionist or dietitian, and there is bountiful information available about the many benefits of various diets. However, we should look at what God has provided when considering lasting change, healthy habits, and transforming your lifestyle. Some of the trending diets, weight loss medications, or other current strategies, may not create the lasting effects that can be achieved by connecting food with our faith, a more holistic approach.

The past few years, I have considered food in this way. From a Biblical perspective, if we made food choices based on what God has made, we’re going to be choosing healthy foods. For example, fruits and vegetables are healthiest in their fresh or raw form, not processed. Eggs are the perfect balance of fats and protein. Nuts and some oils offer the best fats for fueling our bodies. Making food choices that align with how and what God made, can lead us to a lifestyle of healthy eating. Think about it, whenever man touches things, we tend to be destructive. When it comes to food, once we take these raw ingredients God provided, combine them with some chemicals we made, then send them through multiple processes, we make very unhealthy foods! According to the Word, God supplies all we need according to his riches.

Where do you start? How can you start eating this “Godly diet”? In America, we have some farmer’s markets but most of us do much of our grocery shopping in grocery stores.  Most grocery stores have their Godly ingredients around the outer parts. The inner aisles have most of the processed foods. A simple strategy is to focus your shopping on the perimeter of the store where you can find fresh produce, then meat, then dairy and eggs. Some healthy ingredients are found on the inner aisles such as oatmeal, nuts, oils, rice, and canned beans.  Otherwise, you’re looking at chips, cookies, breads, sugar cereals, sodas, and more processed foods.

When we shop for foods that are closest to God’s design and provision, this will lead to improved health. Avoiding fast foods, processed and frozen convenience foods will improve cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure over time. An additional benefit will be weight loss, which we can all appreciate! Energy, vitality, and reversed aging can be added benefits to eating fresh, healthy, and whole foods. God does all things for our good and provides all that we need.

Do we trust God enough to follow his diet plan, his provisions for us? Think about this, He made us, and he made those foods specifically to fuel our bodies. We’re specially engineered to process the foods he designed for us. By not focusing more on foods He has provided, it’s almost as if we think we know better about what’s good for us. It’s easy to suggest this healthy God-given diet, however, building healthy habits can be another undertaking. Mindful eating and having gratitude for what God has provided for us as we’re eating these healthier foods, can be very fulfilling and motivating by connecting mind, body, and spirit. A small simple step is to show gratitude and appreciation for the foods God has provided for you before each meal.
